Important Procedure Information

MRI Safety

Due to the use of a strong magnetic field to produce the pictures, some patients with implanted devices may not have an MRI.  Possible implanted devices include:

  • Pacemakers
  • Aneurysm clips
  • Stents
  • Inner ear implants
  • Bone or neuro stimulations
  • Metal shavings and / or BB’s in your eyes

Kidney Function and IV Contrast

An MRI of the Prostate requires that an IV(Intra-Venous) dye be injected in order to help visualize important structures.  In some patients with risk factors, a lab test to evaluate kidney function may be required prior to the exam.  These risk factors include:

  • Being greater than 60 years of age
  • Having a history of kidney disease or renal failure
  • Diabetes
  • Hypertension (High Blood Pressure) treated with medication
  • Patients who have had an organ transplant
  • Patients with a history of Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis
